Exmouth CAN

Transition Exmouth is excited to launch Exmouth CAN – a new six-month community engagement project that aims to strengthen our town’s response to the climate and ecological emergency.

Thanks to a generous donation, we are able to fund a project worker to coordinate this initiative, working alongside volunteers, local groups and residents to inspire real-world action on sustainability and community resilience.

Why this project?

For over a decade, we’ve supported projects and groups that promote sustainable living. Yet, we know that much of our activity has reached those already passionate about the environment.

The Exmouth CAN project is our next step – reaching out to everyone in Exmouth.

We believe that most people care deeply about the planet and want to make positive changes, but often don’t know where to start. Through doorstep conversations and community stalls, the Exmouth CAN project will give residents space to talk about their experiences, share ideas, and explore what a sustainable Exmouth could look like.

What we’ll do

Over the next six months, our project worker will recruit, train and work alongside a team of volunteers who will visit neighbourhoods across Exmouth. By chatting with residents on their doorstep, we’ll listen, ask questions and gather insights about the challenges and opportunities people face when trying to live more sustainably.

We’ll also take part in local community events, giving more people a chance to meet us, ask questions, and connect with others who care about the environment. Everyone we meet will be invited to complete a short survey to help us identify the most common barriers to action and the ideas residents have for making Exmouth greener and more resilient.

Building connections and community

This is not just about collecting data – it’s about building relationships. People who want to take things further will be introduced to Exmouth’s network of local environmental and community groups, or supported to take action in their own street or neighbourhood. We’re using an Asset-Based Community Development approach, which means focusing on the strengths and skills already present in Exmouth and helping them grow. By connecting individuals, groups and ideas, we hope to make it easier for residents to get involved, support one another and feel good about their collective impact.

What we hope to achieve

By the end of the project, we aim to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of sustainable living across Exmouth.

  • Support more residents to volunteer or take local climate action.

  • Provide valuable insights into what matters most to local people, helping shape future projects and inform our work and the work of other groups and organisations in the town.

Ultimately, we want to see a more connected, climate-aware and resilient Exmouth – a town where everyone feels heard and empowered to be part of the solution.
