COMPETITION DETAIlS:
Enter by creating a response to the prompt:
Imagine a sustainable future for Exmouth where people and nature thrive together.
You can work in groups but any prizes will be shared between you. Your group must all be in the same age category (see below). Your response can be in almost any medium or format! Below are some examples.

Exhibition:
Every one who submits a response will have the opportunity to join our exhibition day to present their creation! You will have the option to come before the event opens and decide how you want to display your work.
If you can’t make the exhibition day, you can still participate - and win! We will be holding a digital exhibition and online voting of all entries from the 6th August to the 8th August, so if we can film, type up or photograph your entry, it can be displayed on the online gallery and people can vote for you both online and on the day (there will be a computer set up for people to look through online only entries).
Who can enter?
The competition is for children and young people from the ages of 8-21 who live or attend school in Exmouth. Participants will be divided into 3 age categories:
-
Budding (8-12)
-
Blooming (13-16)
-
Branching (17-21)
How is the competition judged?
We want to make the competition as fair as possible, so we’ll be asking the general public to join us on the exhibition day and vote on which entry in each age category made the biggest impact on them.
The entries will also be displayed in a digital gallery from 6th-8th August, allowing people who can’t make the event to participate in the voting too.
The winner of each age category will receive a prize:
Budding (8-12): £150 nature activity voucher for you and friends! Details TBA
Blooming (13-16): Cash prize of £150
Branching (17-21): Cash prize of £150
Members of the Transition Exmouth Team will also invite a few entries to be displayed (if you want!) in the Sideshore Community Hub for everyone to enjoy. The ‘guardians of the gallery’ will speak to you on the day if you are chosen!
Competition Timeline:
Sunday 2nd August at 11:59pm: Competition closes.
Thursday 6th August at 12pm: Online exhibition opens and online voting begins.
Saturday 8th August at 11am: Competition entrants can come and help to set up their display.
Saturday 8th August at 12pm - 7pm: Exhibition day begins! There will be a ‘big feelings’ sensory and emotional processing circle to talk about what comes up for you when you think about nature, sustainability and climate, there will be live acoustic music, there will be a speaker from Transition Totnes Youth Circle to inspire us about what it's possible to create, and there will be talks and chats with the local community!
Is Support Available?
We will be hosting a drop in session at the Sideshore Community hub on 21st July between 10am and 4pm for any young people who would like more support with their entry. If accessing materials is difficult for you (for any reason!) - please get in touch and we will do our best to support you to access what you need to get involved.
How to Enter:
To be part of the competition, please email katie99murphy@gmail.com with the following information once you have completed your project:
-
Name (and pronouns if you want to share them)
-
Age (must be 8-21)
-
The name of the town you live in and the town you go to school in
-
The type of response you have chosen (what form is your entry taking, is it a poster, a song, a game?)
-
Access info (do you need any support throughout this process, and/or to access the exhibition day?)
Further Guidance:
The prompt invites you to reflect on what you love about the natural and human world around you and imagine how people and nature could thrive together in the future.
Ask yourself:
-
What does sustainability mean to you?
-
What do you love about nature?
-
What do you feel is missing for nature in Exmouth?
-
How does Exmouth as it is now make you feel about the future? What would you change?
-
How would you like to live alongside nature in a human environment that treats every living being equally?
You can take your entry in any direction that feels right for you when thinking about the prompt. You could focus on one aspect in particular, for instance:
-
A poster or image that shows people living more sustainably in Exmouth (e.g. consuming less and making strong bonds with friends)
-
A song or drama piece about what you love about nature and how the town of Exmouth could help nature
-
An experiment you’ve done in the park or your garden with nature (e.g. how quickly did birds start using a bird feeder you put out, or how long did it take you to spot a hedgehog?)
Other inspiration you could draw on:
-
Exmouth Beach and jurassic coast
-
Exmouth Local Nature Reserve
-
River Exe Estuary
-
Pebbledbed heath
-
East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
-
Existing nature projects/groups (visit the Transition Exmouth website ‘Group and Projects’ page)
Glossary for Younger Participants:
What does sustainable mean?
If something is sustainable, it can be carried on for a long period of time without damaging nature or people in the future. Being sustainable means doing little or no harm to the environment. E.g. Throwing plastic bags away is not sustainable because the planet will eventually run out of oil to make plastic, the plastic waste causes harm to wildlife and we will run out of landfill space for it.
Thrive = to do as well as possible, to be strong and healthy.
Consumption = buying and using things up, and then discarding them.
Human environment = a town, village or city. A place where people live and have created buildings and roads.
Natural environment = a place where nature is in charge like a forest, beach, or river — where plants and animals live without people building things there.
Habitat = the home a plant or animal naturally lives in, and where it has everything it needs to survive — like food, water, shelter, and space to grow.
